We think about what it means to be free and we think about warm honey and the hot sun and kids out doing kid things while we sleep soundly in my 1200 thread count sheets. But being free, to us, has always seemed like a mystery of sorts. A code we need to crack. Some fantasy that we’ve been promised and spoon fed to keep us quiet. That’s what this country has been. Something to BELIEVE in. Not something to be FREE in.
So now, on Juneteenth, we think about what we have to do to be free. And we think that it looks a lot like having the courage to just BE. As our hearts and our hands work tirelessly to create a better world, we strive to find freedom in the every day. Freedom feels like rolling your windows down with a little Lauryn Hill on high, and summer nights massaging Argan Oil into our roots. It looks like family barbecues, and piling food on our plates, and loving and laughing like they never showed us how.
When things get heavy, remember Freedom comes just like breath. It’s effortlessly yours if you let it. Be free. |
